Program Description

The Consultation and Assessment Team conducts psychological evaluations on children who have been removed from the home due to severe abuse and/or neglect to answer diagnostic questions and to aid with treatment and placement planning. CAT also conducts psychological evaluations of parents who have had their children removed in order to evaluate if an underlying mental health condition is implicated in the abusive behavior, determine treatment needs, assess risk factors and assist with family reunification planning (including input as to whether it is safe to proceed with reunification, vs, terminating parental rights). All families are involved with the Child Welfare System, and referrals come from Children and Family Services social workers, or from Intensive Care Coordinators (ICCs) who are part of Contra Costa County Children’s Mental Health. Consultation with social workers and the gathering of extensive collateral information is also necessary. Trainees produce detailed written reports, which go to the court, addressing treatment recommendations, risk assessment and reunification planning.

Trainees will receive assessment-specific didactic, individual and group supervision. Additionally, they will participate in didactic training and case conference with Central Child & Adolescent Services program. Trainees will complete full clinical intakes from October 2023-January 2024 for the outpatient clinic and throughout the training year for client’s who are referred for psychological evaluations.

Although this is primarily an assessment site, trainees will have the option to carry one ongoing therapy case, arranged in coordination with the Central Child & Adolescent Services program during the year.
