Contra Costa Regional Medical Center Named ‘Baby-Friendly Hospital’

Thursday, February 20, 2020

CCRMC is one of only two hospitals to earn the distinction in the county.

Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) in Martinez has been designated as a “Baby-Friendly Hospital,” the highest accreditation for birth centers.

Baby-Friendly hospitals are recognized worldwide as the gold standard for infant bonding and breastfeeding practices. CCRMC is the only other hospital in Contra Costa County to earn the designation aside from John Muir Health in Walnut Creek.

It took more than four years for CCRMC to update maternity-care policies and train and educate healthcare staff in order to earn the accreditation from Baby-Friendly USA. CCRMC has implemented all of the “10 steps to successful breastfeeding.”

“We are so excited to be recognized as a Baby-Friendly hospital. While we’ve always thought of ourselves as baby friendly, this recognition from a highly regarded accrediting organization validates CCRMC as one of the premier hospitals in the region to have a healthy baby,” said Dr. Joan Roux, a CCRMC Pediatrician who led the designation effort.

About 160 babies are delivered each month at CCRMC.

Dr. Roux said educating mothers to exclusively breastfeed during the first six months of their babies’ lives will yield positive long-term health outcomes. Studies show links between breastfeeding and improved health in children; reduced trips to the pediatrician, fewer ear infections, higher immunity, reduced risk for diabetes, and higher IQs,

Currently there are more than 600 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The certificate is maintained by continuing to practice the “10 steps to successful breastfeeding.”

CCRMC will also promote our 7 days a week lactation services in the hospital and eight specialized newborn clinics with lactation services present.
